Metronidazole, Oxytetracycline & Atropine Veterinary Formulation is a combination veterinary preparation containing three active ingredients with different pharmacological actions, intended for use in selected veterinary conditions where antimicrobial and gastrointestinal supportive effects may be required. Metronidazole belongs to the nitroimidazole group of antimicrobials and acts against susceptible anaerobic bacteria and certain protozoal organisms by interfering with their DNA structure and synthesis, ultimately inhibiting their growth. Oxytetracycline is a broad-spectrum antibiotic belonging to the tetracycline group. It works by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit of susceptible bacteria and preventing protein synthesis, thereby inhibiting bacterial growth. It is active against a range of susceptible Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and certain other microorganisms. Atropine is an anticholinergic and antispasmodic agent that blocks muscarinic acetylcholine receptors, helping reduce excessive gastrointestinal smooth-muscle activity and secretions. Through these different mechanisms, the combination may be intended to provide antimicrobial coverage alongside relief of certain spasmodic symptoms, depending on the approved formulation and target animal species. Veterinary applications of the individual ingredients may include selected anaerobic bacterial or protozoal infections and susceptible bacterial infections; however, the combination should not be assumed to treat all gastrointestinal infections or diarrhoeal conditions. The formulation, dosage form and route of administration must be confirmed from the actual product label. Possible adverse effects may include digestive disturbances, reduced appetite, allergic reactions and, with atropine, dry mouth, increased heart rate, reduced intestinal movement or urinary retention. Prolonged or inappropriate antibiotic use may also contribute to antimicrobial resistance. The exact ingredient strengths, dosage form, target species, compatibility and approved indications must be verified before marketing or administration. Use only under veterinary supervision, follow applicable antimicrobial-use regulations and observe prescribed meat and milk withdrawal periods in food-producing animals.
